Housing information should not be harder to reach for some people than for others. Here is what we have done, where we know we fall short, and how to get any of it another way.
Our commitment
We want everyone to be able to use this site, including people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification or voice control. Housing information should not be harder to reach for some people than for others.
What we have done
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. In practice that has meant:
Text and background colours chosen to meet contrast requirements, with a defined minimum size below which nothing that must be read is set.
A visible focus outline on every interactive element, never removed and never left to the browser default.
Menus and dialogs that open and close by keyboard, trap focus while open, and close on Escape.
Tables with real headers and captions, images with alternative text, and decorative images marked as decorative so screen readers skip them.
Touch targets sized for a finger, and pages that do not scroll sideways on a phone.
Respect for the reduce-motion setting: the moving background on the home page stops for anyone who has asked their device to reduce motion.
Where we know we fall short
The interactive community map is inherently visual. Everything on it is also published as a plain, screen-reader-friendly table on the same page, grouped by corridor, so no information is available only through the map.
This is an ongoing effort rather than a finished state, and we would rather hear about a problem than not.
